Nancy’s Notes: At Tailwinds, we especially like to support companies that produce quality merchandise that is made in America. As an example, the company that manufacturers these Airplane Bookends was founded in 1911 and is currently run by fourth generation family members. These classic-looking Airplane Bookends also have a fascinating history. These bookends are actually cast from the original bronze mold that was created generations ago in the 1930s! Compared to modern day casting that may use a rubber mold, a bronze mold is able to provide more in-depth detail and is not prone to pitting. These antique Airplane Bookends truly have excellent quality that is sure to be admired.
The antique Airplane Bookends start with each piece being hand cast into a bronze mold. Molten zinc is hand poured in each mold, and it is the zinc base metal that gives each piece its weight. After casting the “gates” are broken off, and the seam lines are hand sanded and smoothed. The pieces are then buffed, which is a critical step, as any flaws must be eliminated and the surface smoothed before plating. After a series of cleansing baths, the silver tone Airplane Bookends are plated in antiqued nickel followed by drying. Each piece is then hand polished on a leather wheel followed by a dipping process that includes lacquering. Finally the piece is then dried and baked to provide for lasting beauty.
