The UH-1 Iroquois was manufactured by Bell Helicopter. The Iroquois is a multi-purpose military helicopter famous for its use in the Vietnam War. The original designation of HU-1 (helicopter utility) was developed in 1955 and led to the nickname Huey. The name became so popular that Bell put the Huey name on the anti-torque pedals. The military began using the helicopter in 1959 and over 16,000 were produced. Over 7,000 helicopters were used in Vietnam with approximately 2500 lost in combat or in operational accidents.
