Our TBD Devastator Airplane is a replica scale model of the original aircraft manufactured by Douglas Aircraft. When first released for service in 1937 the TBD Devastator was the most advanced aircraft for the US Navy. However, by 1941 the airplane was too slow and lack the maneuverability that the Japanese Zero airplane possessed. In the Battle of Midway 41 Devastator aircraft for launched and had zero torpedo hits, and regrettably, only 6 TBD airplanes made it back to their carrier. After this dismal performance the Devastator was withdrawn from battle service, and explains why only 130 aircraft were built.
The Douglas TDB Devastator model is an authentic, extraordinary replica of the original aircraft that has been faithfully reproduced with kiln dried Philippine mahogany wood. Each model is meticulously carved, hand sanded and painted following exact blueprint details of the original aircraft. The result is a handsome, wood airplane sculpture to be admired and enjoyed. It also arrives with an attractive wood base for display.
