In the 1930s the Boeing Company manufactured and won the U.S. Army Air Corps competition to develop a bomber aircraft. Boeing manufactured the B-17 Flying Fortress, a 4-engine heavy bomber which quickly became backbone of the Allied forces during WWII. Ultimately 12,731 B-17s were built.
